Are Thermometers Still Made With Mercury?
I had a plastic pool thermometer in my pool and I just found that it is broken. The liquid inside was red in color and I am trying to figure out if it was mercury. Not to mention if it was mercury, what do I do now that it is in my pool water, pipes and filters? I have tried looking up the manufacturer info online with no luck. The only thing I can find is stores selling the thermometer and they web sites don’t say if its made with mercury.
Nope, mercury is silver.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercury_(el…
And it is a poison.
Best wish’s,

The ones that are colored are not mercury.
Even if it was, the amount of mercury that was released, while still not good, will not dilute in the water. Even if it did, it would be diluted to a point where it would be negligible.
I still use mercury thermometers for check my temperature, and separate thermometers to check the temperature of photo chemicals when developing. While the other stuff is good, mercury is still more accurate in my opinion. With photo chemistry, precise temperatures are a MUST! Half a degree can make a difference.
Also, I’ve gone through three electrics. One mercury lasted me 15 years before. Less that can break, though I wouldn’t recommend one for children.
mercury looks silverish in color, check the physical properties, if it has some cool physical properties, then it is mercury. My dad has some mercury he had from when he was a kid, some cool stuff if you know how to be safe.
No, it is now illegal to make them with mercury. Some may illegally but i doubt it.
i dont think so. they found out mercury was poisonous a long time ago..
